Multiply length by width in feet, multiply by depth in feet, then divide by 27. For a new lawn use 2 to 3 inches of depth. A 30 by 20 foot lawn at 3 inches needs about 5.6 yards.
About 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 81 square feet at 4 inches, or 54 square feet at 6 inches. Double the depth and you halve the coverage.
About 1.2 cubic yards to fill it 12 inches deep. Use Garden Mix #1, which carries much more compost than plain topsoil.
Two to three inches of screened topsoil over what is already there. If the ground underneath is compacted, break it up first or roots will hit a wall two inches down.
Weight runs out before space does. A half-ton is usually good for about one yard of topsoil, less if it is wet. Check a trailer rating on the plate rather than guessing.
